![]() ![]() In other words, we must evaluate the cognitive challenges presented by enrichment phenomena and to know whether it is eliciting the intended cognitive skills, as well as any emotional or behavioral affect it is having upon the animals involved ( 16). Cognitive enrichment requires us to simultaneously measure how the animal is performing cognitively (i.e., their learning, memory, problem-solving skills), and their welfare state (i.e., if their wellbeing is positively affected by the enrichment). For the focus of this paper, however, we are interested in the use of technology to automatically log an animal's response to a cognitive enrichment device, foremost to save researcher time and effort, but also to prevent human observation from influencing animal behavior. Technology also creates opportunities for instant feedback and to automate processes such as food reward presentation ( 13– 15). Digital interfaces can augment how cognitive challenges are provided to animals in their enclosure (e.g., the contrast between a tangible and digital maze, for example), and furthermore, provide more novel and repeatable experiences across time ( 13). We believe there is great potential to embed technology within cognitive enrichment and there are several possible avenues for realizing this. Previous research has identified cognitive enrichment as being particularly applicable to great apes under human care following decades of study into their cognitive abilities as compared to humans, and their swift adaptation to novel phenomena ( 12). Animals may also directly experience technological feedback systems in the form of lights, tones or vibrations ( 9, 10).Ĭognitive enrichment is a form of enrichment that aims to challenge the evolved cognitive skills of animals to enhance their welfare, yet it remains under-provisioned in many zoo settings ( 11). ![]() Contemporary animal-computer interaction (ACI) usually involves animals directly interacting with components such as touchscreens ( 4, 6), buttons or joysticks ( 7, 8), and therefore animals need to be trained to use the technology. However, the concept of zoo animals interacting with technology for the purposes of enrichment has experienced a renaissance over the past two decades ( 3– 5). The use of technology in zoos can be traced back to the research of Hal Markowitz beginning in the late 1970s and the birth of “behavioral engineering” ( 1, 2). To end, we describe a future system that combines machine learning and sensor technology which could automate the collection of data in real-time for use by researchers and animal care staff.Īnimal technologies in zoos have a long history they reflect society's changing perceptions of animal intelligence and welfare, and technological advancements and fashions. This highlights the need for additional technology, such as infrared sensors, to fully automate cognitive enrichment evaluation. ![]() ![]() Additionally, researcher input was still required to visually identify which maze modules were being used by gorillas and how. Therefore, we suggest a system like this is only appropriate for long-term projects. However, its development was a heavy investment, requiring specialized hardware and interdisciplinary expertise. The facial recognition system was very effective at identifying individual gorillas (97% mean average precision) and could automate specific downstream tasks (for example, duration of engagement). Concurrent traditional video recording and behavioral coding by eye was undertaken for comparison. We explored whether machine learning could automatically identify individual gorillas through facial recognition, and automate the collection of device-use data including the order, frequency and duration of use by the troop. In this paper, we describe how a facial recognition system, developed using machine learning, was embedded within a cognitive enrichment device (a vertical, modular finger maze) for a troop of seven Western lowland gorillas ( Gorilla gorilla gorilla) at Bristol Zoo Gardens, UK. However, despite its various positive applications to wildlife in recent years, there has been little uptake of machine learning in zoo animal care. The use of computer technology within zoos is becoming increasingly popular to help achieve high animal welfare standards. 5Bristol Vet School, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Bristol, Bristol, United Kingdom.4School of Life Sciences, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, United Kingdom.3School of Psychological Science, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Bristol, Bristol, United Kingdom.2Centre for Entrepreneurship, Faculty of Engineering, University of Bristol, Bristol, United Kingdom.1Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Engineering, University of Bristol, Bristol, United Kingdom.Clark 3,4 Elisabeth Roberts 5 Tilo Burghardt 1 Otto Brookes 1 * Stuart Gray 2 Peter Bennett 1 Katy V. ![]() ![]() ![]() Symbols and motifs visually convey (instantly and across language barriers) messages that were deeply meaningful to the women and men that held them. The stories of Odin, Thor, Freya, or the Viking heroes that we have now were all passed on by careful word of mouth until they were finally written down as the sagas by descendants of the Vikings centuries later. So, while the Norse culture was very rich in poetry, stories, and songs, this was all transmitted orally. The Vikings also had letters (known as runes), but writing itself was sacred and even magical. Thanks to the Marvel movies, nearly everyone now knows about Thor's hammer (Mjölnir) which was a very popular choice for Vikings to use in their jewelry as represented in this ancient Danish artifact to the right. The cosmic forces and fate were active in everything. There was no separation (as there so often is today) between faith and reality. The spirituality of the Norse Vikings was so ingrained in their culture and thought process that they had no word for religion. Symbols played an important role in Norse culture. Vegvisir (Post Viking Age Icelandic: Compass)ĭragon (Jormungandr and other Norse Dragons)Ĭats, Bears (Freya's Cats, Berserker Bears, etc) Ægishjálmr (Post Viking Age Icelandic: Helm of Awe) "By the end of the 10th century the Vikings in Ireland had adopted Christianity, and with the fusion of cultures it is often difficult to distinguish between Viking and Irish artifacts at this time." or Slavic, English, etc. The National Museum of Ireland stated the following on their website: Many of the last few generations of these Vikings were often the children of a Celtic mother. We offer an entire separate article discussing the controversy of their origin. Other examples of non-Viking aged symbols include the Troll Cross (not shown) which is based on later Swedish folklore.īy the end of the Viking age, Vikings were already beginning to blend with the cultures they settled in. Two other very popular symbols known as the ' Viking Compass' (Vegvisir) and the ' Helm of Awe' (Ægishjálmur) which were both first found in Icelandic magic books from the 19th century. But of course, just as we can still interpret these runes a thousand years later, it makes sense that at least some Vikings were able to do so as well. As well, the original true meaning of these symbols are simply educated guesses by archaeologists, anthropologists, and historians.Ī few symbols that are often considered 'Viking' actually have no proof of ever being used during the Viking age, such as the the Elder Futhark runes which most scholars believe were replaced by the Younger Futhark runes around the beginning of the Viking Age. Some of these iconic images were primarily used before or not until well after the Viking age. It is helpful to understand the true origin and background of each symbol. ![]() ![]() ![]() If they think that the mistake or mistakes made on your speeding ticket are not going to result in a favorable decision on your part, they should be honest with you and help you to understand why. As the officer must have determined the speed of the vehicle by targeting a car and utilizing a radar unit. ![]() This can be relevant, especially if the ticket is related to a speeding ticket and the officer was utilizing a radar. For example, let’s say you were driving a black car but the officer marked the color as red. For instance, if the mistake had to do with the target vehicle’s color. If the error had something to do with the incident itself, this increases the chances that you will be able to get the ticket decision reversed. A few errors on the one ticket, whether relevant or not to the actual offense, can be used to put doubt in the mind of the judge as to whether the officer was able to make a sound and effective judgment. A catalog of mistakes like this could cause the judge to look at your ticket differently because it could indicate that the office may have been tired due to working for eight hours, and so they may have made some mistakes as a result. Nevertheless, if there are a number of different mistakes on the ticket that are not necessarily relevant to the violation, for example, the city of residence, hair color, or driver’s age. If you were speeding, the officer accidentally putting that you were two years younger on the driving ticket, this does not really make a difference in terms of what happened, and so it is unlikely to make a difference. If the officer was to record 1986 for the date of birth, instead of 1989, yes, this is an error, but it is not something that does not make a difference in terms of the actual ticket. It very much depends on how relevant the mistake is to the violation, as well as the gravity of the error.įor instance, if the officer has made a mistake when it comes to recording your age on the citation or the date of birth for the driver, this mistake may not be a good enough reason for the judge to dismiss the ticket.
